Team Leader - Ngā tai oranga

Location: Wellington

Contract: Permanent. Full-Time

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is dedicated to serving all New Zealanders. Through integration and collaboration, we’re building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whānau-centred care, and excellence.

About the Role

As Team Leader for Ngā Tai Oranga, you will lead the day-to-day delivery of the service and support clinicians to provide high-quality, psychologically informed care for tāngata whaiora experiencing significant distress intolerance, emotion dysregulation and interpersonal difficulties.

The role includes coordinating the development of Whole of Service Response Plans (WSRPs), facilitating clinical consultations around formulation, treatment planning and risk management, providing supervision, and supporting education across mental health services.

You will lead a team focused on effective and responsive service delivery, clinical excellence and positive health outcomes. You will also work closely with teams across the wider localities to ensure Ngā Tai Oranga is visible, connected and integrated across MHAIDS.

Alongside your leadership responsibilities, you will remain involved in clinical practice, education and group work.

About the Team/Service/Location

We are multi-disciplinary team of eight clinicians. We are passionate about working with tāngata whaiora who have significant difficulties with emotion regulation, self-identity and relational capacities. Often this group of people are marginalised, and we advocate for compassion, robust formulations, best practice and evidence informed treatments.

Our team works well together because we apply the skills we teach in therapy to ourselves. We promote open communication and care for each other, because we know that in order to provide effective therapies, we need to feel well supported. The team leader meets regularly with staff to provide support and guidance. We often work in pairs in our teaching and consultations.

About you

You will be passionate about supporting teams to deliver high-quality, person-directed mental health services within the community. You will bring strong leadership capability and the ability to work collaboratively across services to support safe, effective and psychologically informed care.

You will bring:

  • Registration with a relevant Health Regulatory Board and a current Annual Practising Certificate (APC)
  • Strong knowledge and experience working with personality disorders, complex PTSD and other co-morbid difficulties
  • Experience delivering intensive DBT in both group and individual settings
  • Experience leading and supporting a team of clinicians
  • The ability to work collaboratively with mental health clinicians and provide specialist expertise
  • Confidence working in complex, emotionally challenging and changing environments
  • Strong communication, relationship-building and organisational skills
  • An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and a commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for Māori
  • Flexibility, adaptability and resilience when working with complexity and ambiguity
