Anaesthesia Provisional Fellowship Extended Role positions – Fixed-term Wellington 2027
Nau mai, haere mai ki Ūpoko ki te uru hauora.
Our opportunities
- Anaesthesia Provisional Fellowship Trainee positions
- Starting 1st February 2027 or 2nd August 2027.
- Allocations available at Wellington Regional Hospital
- Internal applicants only (Health NZ Capital and Coast, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa districts)
We are looking to appoint trainees that are due to start ANZCA Provisional Fellowship Training (PFT) or equivalent on 1st February 2027 or 2nd August 2027.
Internal applicants only (currently working with Health NZ Capital and Coast, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa districts)
Positions are full time for 12 months. In their cover letter candidates are encouraged to indicate their preferences for a number of pre-defined study plans (see below) which are mostly divided into two 6-month periods. If you are successful in gaining a position, the service will do their best to accommodate your preferences. Successful candidates will be primarily based at Wellington Regional Hospital, but will also spend time at Kenepuru Hospital.
Most PFTs will participate in the after-hours RMO roster, however 4 PFTs, 2 starting in February and 2 starting in August, will be given the ‘extended role’ where they are seconded to work on the after-hours SMO roster (with SMO support). These will be 12 month positions
RMO salaries are calculated based on relevant previous years of experience and the average weekly hours of work as set out in the relevant run description. For the current salary bands, please refer to either the Specialty Trainees of New Zealand (SToNZ) or Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) Collective Agreements.
Those in the ‘extended role’ will be paid at Step 1 of the Medical Officer ASMS pay scale
Experience and Eligibility
- In order to take up the post, successful applicants need to meet the ANZCA requirements for progressing to PFT. This means that they will have completed the Advanced Training Core Unit Review and have prospective approval from ANZCA for PFT in this post by the start date of 1st February 2027 or 2nd August 2027.
- Non-ANZCA trainees will need to be at an equivalent point of their training program i.e. have completed all major exams and subspecialty rotations. This can be discussed on an individual basis.
- You must have eligibility for general or provisional general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Information on the process of application for this can be found on their website at http://www.mcnz.org.nz/ or http://www.mcnz.org.nz/get-registered/registration-self-assessment-tool/
- You will need to be a NZ or Australian citizen or resident, or have an appropriate visa to be eligible to live and work in NZ. The immigration NZ website can be found at https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-visas
Wellington Regional and Kenepuru Hospitals
Wellington Regional Hospital is a major regional teaching centre and tertiary hospital for a population of around 1 million. We see a challenging and varied mix of cases that include cardiothoracic, vascular, paediatric and neurosurgical anaesthesia. We have 15 main operating theatres that provide anaesthetic services, in addition to delivery suite, radiology and radiotherapy. There are four additional theatres at Kenepuru Hospital, which accommodates a higher proportion of day cases. There are both acute and chronic pain services and dedicated anaesthetic pre-assessment clinics. PFTs also have the opportunity to be involved with delivering the weekly teaching sessions for registrars and SHOs. We also have an on-site Simulation and Skills Centre which is used regularly to deliver high-fidelity simulation education sessions and courses.
About the Provisional Fellowship Trainee positions
One of the aims of the PFT year is to have increasing responsibility for managing your own lists and supervising more junior trainees, while still receiving SMO support and supervision. There will be half a day per week of non-clinical time for you to develop audit, teaching or research interests. We have a number of teaching streams and research projects in which trainees can get involved. If you take on a project which requires more than half a day of non-clinical time per week, you will be able to apply for this via the department executive.
We offer the following pre-defined PFT study plans:
- Cardiothoracic anaesthesia (12 months)
- Anaesthesia for ENT and dental surgery/anaesthesia for children (6 months each)
- Orthopaedic anaesthesia/vascular anaesthesia (6 months each)
- Obstetric anaesthesia/simulation in anaesthesia (6 months each)
- Orthopaedic anaesthesia/Pain medicine (6 months each)
- Anaesthesia for GI surgery/Perioperative medicine (6 months each)
- Research in anaesthesia (12 months)
- Anaesthesia for interventional radiology and remote locations/Neuroanaesthesia (6 months each)
We are prepared to consider and apply to ANZCA for prospective approval of other study plans if we feel that the local workload could support your needs. This would need to be discussed ahead of your application. It is also possible to complete all or part of PFT in the Intensive Care Unit but this would need to be discussed in advance with anaesthesia and ICU, and be approved prospectively by ANZCA.
All PFT posts are designed to allow you to spend approximately 40% of your weekdays in your subspecialty, with the remainder of the week doing general duties.
Because there is competition for the different PFT positions we need you to provide a ranked list of your top four choices. Your options will be discussed at interview. You will also need to indicate whether you wish to be considered for the “extended role” position which involves working on the SMO roster as described above.
Provisional Fellowship in Clinical Leadership (Chief Resident in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, CRAIC)
There is also the opportunity to apply for a Provisional Fellowship in Clinical Leadership (CRAIC) position, in conjunction with one of the PFT study plans as above. This role will be linked to one of the extended role positions and is for 12 months. There will be two positions available, one starting on 1st February 2027 and one starting on 2nd August 2027. Each position will entail months as the deputy Chief Resident followed by 6 months as the Chief Resident.
This is a fully supported role and the main responsibilities relate to collaboration with RMOs, the RMO Unit, senior clinicians (including the CMO and the CD of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care and Pain Management), and assistance with the appointment, allocation and management of Anaesthesia Registrars and Senior House Officers. It is a junior Clinical Leadership position and as such provides a unique introduction to clinical governance, service organisational issues and workforce management.
