- Allocations available at Wellington Regional Hospital
We are looking for SHO’s interested in anaesthesia training within the NZ Central Region. These posts are primarily based in Wellington Hospital with some time spent at Kenepuru Hospital. They provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to complete all the requirements of ANZCA Introductory Training. After successful completion of ANZCA Introductory Training candidates will progress into a registrar post within the Central New Zealand Rotational Anaesthesia Training Program to begin ANZCA Basic Training. This may be at Wellington, Hutt, Palmerston North, Whanganui, Nelson or Hawke’s Bay Hospitals.
RMO salaries are calculated based on relevant previous years of experience and the average weekly hours of work as set out in the relevant run description. For the current salary bands, please refer to either the Specialty Trainees of New Zealand (SToNZ) or Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) Collective Agreements.
Mō tō mātou rōpū – About our team
Join our fellow 615+ Resident Medical Officers employed by Capital, Coast, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa District Hospitals to gain leading experience, medical supervision and training.
Wellington Regional and Kenepuru Hospitals
Wellington Regional Hospital is a major regional teaching centre and tertiary hospital for a population of 900,000. We see a challenging and varied mix of cases that cover cardiothoracic, vascular, paediatric and neurosurgical anaesthesia. We have 15 main operating theatres that provide anaesthetic services, in addition to our birthing unit and radiology and radiotherapy suites. There are four additional theatres at Kenepuru Hospital, which accommodates a higher proportion of day case surgeries. There are both acute and chronic pain services and dedicated anaesthetic pre-assessment clinics. SHOs will attend weekly teaching sessions targeted at their level of training, which includes use of a high fidelity simulation centre.
About the Central New Zealand Rotational Anaesthetic Training Program
The Central New Zealand Rotational Anaesthetic Training Program involves collaboration between Wellington, Hutt, Palmerston North, Hawke’s Bay, Whanganui and Nelson Hospitals. The program has approximately 60 registrar positions, and provides all of the requirements for trainees to gain Fellowship to the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthesia (ANZCA).
To facilitate trainees being able to return to Wellington for their advanced training runs, it is expected all trainees will complete the majority of their basic training outside of the Wellington Region. In practice, this means that if you start your Introductory Training in Wellington it is expected that you will rotate to Hawkes Bay or Palmerston North after 6-12 months for the next 12-24 months. Completing an application for this position is considered to indicate a willingness to rotate outside of Wellington. If this will be a problem then you should discuss your application with the Rotational Supervisor (see below) in advance.
Registrars in the rotation have a high success rate in the ANZCA examinations, typically sitting the Primary Examination while at Hawke’s Bay or Palmerston North Hospitals, and then the Final Examination when at Wellington or Hutt Hospitals.
Please note that the information you provide in your application will be shared amongst the hospitals in the rotation listed above. In addition, the information will be shared at a national teleconference where co-ordination of anaesthetic trainee placements within the four training rotations takes place annually. By submitting an application you agree to this information being shared, unless you object in writing.
