Cardiology Fellow (Electrophysiology)
Location: Wellington Regional Hospital, Kenepuru Hospital, Hutt Hospital

About the role
This Fellowship offers advanced, hands-on training in electrophysiology and cardiac device implantation within a busy, purpose-built laboratory environment. The Fellow will develop expertise as a primary operator in arrhythmia procedures, including electrophysiology studies, ablation, and pacing/device procedures. The service offers 3D mapping and a full range of interventional electrophysiology procedures, including complex atrial and ventricular arrhythmia ablation using radiofrequency and cryoablation technologies.
The Fellow can expect to spend around eight sessions per week in the laboratory and two sessions in SMO-led outpatient clinics. The unit includes two Electrophysiology SMOs and three additional pacing SMOs, and performs approximately 600 device procedures and 330 ablations each year.
Depending on MCNZ registration status, there may also be opportunities to contribute to either the RMO roster or SMO roster cover.
The role includes an expectation to participate in research, departmental education and teaching. Fellows will also have opportunities to attend national and international meetings, including Heart Rhythm NZ and quarterly NZ Cardiac Inherited Disease Group video conferences. The Wellington arrhythmia team is collaborative and well supported, offering the Fellow the chance to work closely with a collegial group of dedicated healthcare professionals.
About the Team/Service/ Location
The Wellington Cardiology Department provides secondary and tertiary care for patients with cardiac health problems. Secondary services are provided for people living in the Wellington Region, Porirua Basin and Kāpiti Coast with tertiary referrals accepted from Hutt Valley, Palmerston North, MidCentral, Wairarapa, Whanganui, Hawke’s Bay and Nelson Marlborough.
Our department offers most modern cardiac services, excluding cardiac transplantation and complex paediatric procedures. Services include outpatient and specialist clinics across several hospital sites. The department also provides cardiac rehabilitation, diagnostic monitoring and acute cardiac care. They also provides advanced cardiac imaging and has strong links with the Wellington School of Medicine and University of Otago.
Our procedure suite includes three catheter laboratories offering diagnostic, interventional, electrophysiology and structural heart procedures.
Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district is located centrally in Wellington and has over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington region. We operate three hospitals – Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua – as well as the Kāpiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.
About you
- Vocationally registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
- Able to register for vocational registration with the FRACP
- FRACP written and clinical exams or equivalent, and preferably completion and approval of the RACP advanced training in cardiology
- Relevant experience and training
