Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of TeTiriti o Waitangi and is dedicated to serving all New Zealanders. Through integration and collaboration, we’re building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whānau-centred care, and excellence.

About the role

This Fellowship offers advanced, hands-on training in invasive diagnostic cardiac procedures and coronary intervention within a high-volume cardiac catheterisation laboratory environment. The Fellow will develop expertise as a primary operator in diagnostic angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention, with exposure to contemporary interventional techniques and technologies including FFR/resting indices, IVUS, OCT, IVL, orbital atherectomy and rotational atherectomy.

The Fellow will gain broad experience across the full spectrum of coronary disease, supported by an extensive primary PCI network for the Central New Zealand Region. This includes chronic stable coronary artery disease, chronic total occlusions, calcified lesions, bifurcation disease, acute coronary syndromes and ST-elevation myocardial infarction, as well as ethanol septal ablation. There may also be exposure to structural heart interventions, including TAVI, left atrial appendage closure, ASD/PFO closure and mitral valvuloplasty.

The role is predominantly laboratory-based, with the Fellow expected to spend around nine sessions per week in the cardiac catheterisation laboratory and one session in an outpatient clinic. Over the course of the Fellowship, Fellows are expected to be involved in more than 500 PCI procedures, 300 intravascular imaging studies and selected structural interventions.

Depending on Medical Council of New Zealand registration status, there may be opportunities to contribute to either the RMO roster or SMO roster cover. The Fellowship also includes an expectation to participate in research, with opportunities across translational and clinical science projects. Fellows are supported with mentoring in study design, grant writing, ethics and institutional review processes, and in presenting and publishing their work.
