Charge Nurse Manager Ward – Medical / Acute Frailty Unit
Location: Wellington Regional Hospital
Contract: Permanent, Full Time 1.0 FTE Monday-Friday

About the Role
The Charge Nurse Manager (CNM) position is responsible for the effective management of Ward 6 East / Ward 3 Acute Frailty Unit (AFU). The CNM will do this through managing and leading the people, systems, processes and resources that facilitate clinically safe, efficient and effective service delivery across the two Wards.
The CNM will provide clinical and professional leadership to the team, developing the nursing service, ensuring quality standards are met and contributing to the strategic direction for Ward 6 East and Ward 3 (AFU).
To support the implementation of organisational initiatives and day-to-day management of all nursing areas (people, process, and physical resources), and to ensure a safe patient journey within the area of responsibility. The outcomes of the role are to improve the health and well-being of patients and whānau, in an environment that promotes excellence in care and education, inspiring staff to reach their full potential
About the Team/Service Location
The Team works with General Medicine and Geriatric specialities. General Medicine is the largest inpatient service and provides assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients who present acutely. This patient group is increasing in number and complexity in tandem with the ageing population and the increase in consumer expectations with regard to healthcare. The average age of the inpatient population is greater than 75 years.
The focus of the AFU is to provide timely geriatric assessment and MDT intervention for patients living with frailty to reduce deconditioning, facilitate recovery and prioritise reintegration into the community.
- Acute medical care and assessment
- Infectious diseases: general and HIV medicine
- Diabetes and endocrine, dermatology, rheumatology, neurology and oncology (acute presenting)
- Respiratory (inpatients)
- Acute Frailty Services (older adult rehabilitation and allied health services)
- Alcohol and drug detoxification
- Consultation to surgical, orthopaedic and ICU patients
- Medical presentations (are the most common group of patients) in the Emergency Department (ED).
About you
The CNM – Medicine/Acute Frailty Unit uses advanced nursing knowledge and skills to:
- Articulate a strong nursing vision and provide leadership to achieve strategic goals and objectives
- Manages systems, processes, and resources that enable staff to meet the needs of the patient/whanau
Experience and Capability
- Essential Professional Qualifications / Accreditations / Registrations skills and experience:
- Registration with Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ)
- A current APC and scope appropriate to place of work
- Demonstrates an understanding of the significance of and obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including how to apply Te Tiriti principles in a meaningful way in the nursing role
- A commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for Māori
- A personal commitment to on-going learning and development including attainment/maintenance of PDRP
- Post Graduate Diploma qualification, working towards Master’s Degree (nursing or health-related)
- At least 4-5 years’ experience as an RN
- Experience in a nursing leadership
- Experience in leading quality improvement initiatives
- Development, implementation and monitoring of policies, audits, protocols and guidelines
- Competent computer skills
- Development, implementation and monitoring of policies, audits, protocols and guidelines
