Contract:  Permanent, full time (40 hours p/w)

Salary:      As per ASMS SECA

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is dedicated to serving all New Zealanders. Through integration and collaboration, we’re building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whānau-centred care, and excellence.

About the role

We are seeking a visionary and experienced Clinical Lead – Senior Medical Officer to join our Radiology Service across Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley. This is a unique opportunity to lead a high-performing team while helping shape the future of diagnostic imaging in Aotearoa.

As part of our digital innovation journey, Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley will soon host two of New Zealand’s first Photon Counting CT (PCCT) scanners—arriving at Kenepuru Hospital next month and Wellington Hospital early next year. This advanced technology will transform cardiac, neuro, vascular and Paediatric diagnostics, delivering sharper scans and revealing subtle abnormalities previously undetectable.

This is more than a leadership role—it’s a chance to be part of a transformational shift in how we deliver care, harnessing digital tools to support clinical excellence and improve patient outcomes.

Leadership responsibilities will be shared with participation as a diagnostic or interventional Radiologist.

You will:

  • Provide clinical leadership across our Radiology services
  • Guide service development, workforce planning, and quality improvement
  • Participate in diagnostic or interventional radiology, including on-call duties
  • Support teaching and supervision of radiology trainees (RANZCR-accredited training site)
  • Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated, patient-centred care

About the Team/Service/ Location

Join our close-knit, multi-skilled team and enjoy the opportunity to relocate to one of New Zealand’s most stunning regions. We foster a supportive environment that values ongoing education and encourages the development of individual specialties. Involvement in multidisciplinary meetings promote strong collegial relationships across departments.

Our Radiology Service operates across Wellington Regional Hospital, a tertiary center, and Kenepuru Hospital, offering a wide range of diagnostic and interventional imaging. The team includes Consultant Radiologists, Registrars, MITs, and Sonographers, with a strong emphasis on teaching, professional growth, and regional collaboration.

Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district is located centrally in Wellington and has over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington region. We operate three hospitals – Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua – as well as the Kāpiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.

Why Join Us?

  • Be part of a digitally progressive health district leading the way in imaging innovation
  • Work in a collaborative, supportive team with strong regional and national networks
  • Enjoy the lifestyle benefits of living in Wellington or Porirua, with access to vibrant culture, nature, and community
  • Contribute to a health system that is equity-focused, patient and whānau-centred, and future-ready

About you

You are a proven clinical leader with a passion for excellence in patient care and service development. While a background in Radiology is preferred, it is not essential—your leadership capabilities, strategic thinking, and commitment to equity in healthcare are what truly set you apart.

If you are a Radiologist, you will hold vocational registration in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ), and Fellowship with RANZCR or an equivalent qualification. Subspecialty expertise—such as musculoskeletal (MSK), interventional, paediatrics, or breast imaging—is highly valued.

You thrive in collaborative environments, champion quality improvement initiatives, and are driven to make a meaningful impact across clinical services. Your ability to inspire teams, lead change, and advocate for equitable outcomes makes you an ideal fit for this pivotal role.

  • Vocationally registered in Radiology with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
  • FRANZCR or equivalent qualification and be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ
  • Be able to provide consistently high standards of medical care and leadership direction
  • Possess the relevant experience, skills and clinical and leadership practice
