Clinical Nurse Coordinator (CNC) – Neonatal Transport
Location: Wellington Regional Hospital
Contract: Permanent, Part Time 0.3 FTE

About the Role
The Clinical Nurse Coordinator (CNC) – Neonatal Transport provides coordination of staff, systems and resources for the NICU Transport Team on Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to ensure service delivery is safe, equitable, efficient and effective. This CNC role contributes to operational and quality initiatives for the flight services as a delegated responsibility from the Nurse Manger and provides transport education for the NICU service.
The CNC uses clinical expertise to support effective nursing care when moving infants, contributing to the supervision and coaching of nurses on the Transport team.
About the Team/Service Location
The Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Service provides tertiary-level care for the Central Region of New Zealand and operates a 24-hour Infant Retrieval Service. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is resourced for up to 40 cots, with the ability to expand to 46 when required.
The service also provides telephone consultation and clinical advice across the region, as well as education and support to Level II referral units. Within the Capital & Coast area, the NICU delivers Level II and Level I neonatal care, ensuring continuity of care for infants and families.
The NICU team is a multidisciplinary workforce comprising neonatologists, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, registered nurses, allied health professionals, and support staff. The team works collaboratively to provide family-centred, safe, and evidence-based care for premature and critically unwell infants. In addition to direct clinical care, the team supports families in transition from hospital to community services and contributes to regional quality improvement, teaching, and education initiatives.
About you
All nurses employed by Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand will have Registration with the New Zealand Nursing Council and maintain a current Annual Practising Certificate as a Registered Nurse.
The CNC for flight service – works in partnership with clinical staff and management for the provision of expert care while the neonate is transiting to the next health care provider. The CNC is integral in NICU senior nursing team and coordinates people, systems and resources for neonates in transit in and out of the NICU. This transport is between hospitals, as part of the regional tertiary provision and within the national circuit.
This CNC role provides leadership in the flight service and therefore supports practice improvements and best practice implementation to ensure ever higher levels of safe and competent practice.
Duties
The CNC will provide use flight knowledge and co-ordination skills to:
- Enhance the safety and care for infants and their families during transport, by providing a high level of specialist education to the flight multi-disciplinary team (MDT).
- Developing policies that ensure best practice standards are applied.
- Manage a transport service for the NICU using in-depth knowledge of Aviation Physiology, Aeromedical Nursing. This includes optimal use of specialised equipment through working within external agencies practices and protocols (i.e. Life flight, Wellington Free Ambulance and St John, CAA and other DHBs).
- Improve neonate health outcomes working with their families by providing flight staff with clinical expertise and skills ability to work effectively with the MDT.
- Manage efficient data system regarding infant movement.

- Current work visa
- 5 years recent Neonatal Intensive Care Unit experience
- PDRP – Expert or Proficient working towards Expert
- Excellent communication skills
- Is able to demonstrate innovation, strategy development and able to work in partnership with the Nurse Manager and clinical partners to change the service to meet needs.
- Has a genuine interest in promoting the interests of neonates and their families.
- Ability to focus on quality and risk management.
- Ability to work with multiple teams in a collaborative and collegial manner
- Ability to manage multiple projects
