Location: Wellington Regional Hospital - Children’s Cancer Service, Te Wao Nui 

Contract: Permanent, Part-time (0.7 FTE) position with the Children’s Cancer Service, working weekday day shifts from 0800 to 1630 hours, totalling seven shifts per fortnight, with specific days to be confirmed

Salary: MECA Senior Nurse - Grade 2: $116,040 - 127,674

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Registered Nurse to join our children’s ward, offering an exciting opportunity to advance your career in paediatric oncology nursing.

In this Clinical Nurse Specialist role, you will provide expert clinical support to frontline teams, ensuring effective, coordinated care for children undergoing cancer treatment across the Wellington, Hutt Valley, and Wairarapa regions. You will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and contribute to the delivery of family-centred, compassionate care.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in paediatric oncology nursing, with a strong clinical knowledge and skills base, and a proven track record of delivering high standards of care. Experience within the Children’s Cancer Service (CCS) is highly advantageous. As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, you will be expected to manage complex cases independently, coordinate care across multiple teams and disciplines, and demonstrate professional communication skills when working with patients and vulnerable whānau during challenging times.

About the Team/Service/Location

The Child Health Service for the Wellington Region and Central New Zealand is a tertiary center providing specialised medical and surgical care for children up to 16 years old. It offers a mix of inpatient, outpatient, day patient, and domiciliary services. Within Te Wao Nui, the inpatient wards Piko and Kōwhai provide dedicated care for hospitalised children.

The Wellington Children’s Cancer Service is New Zealand’s largest shared care centre for paediatric oncology, providing ongoing local management of care following initial diagnosis and treatment at CHOC. The service handles a complex caseload that includes the administration of advanced therapies, intensive follow-up, coordination of care, and comprehensive support. The service operates Monday through Friday and is supported by a dedicated full-time Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). You will work closely with the CNS, collaborating and sharing caseloads to provide essential clinical care, psychosocial support, and coordination for an expanding and increasingly complex paediatric oncology patient population. This role aligns with national healthcare priorities by promoting equitable access to services and ensuring the sustainable delivery of high-quality cancer care throughout the Wellington region.

Skills and experience

  • Minimum 5 years nursing experience. Previous paediatric oncology nursing experience essential
  • Clinical Postgraduate Diploma is the required qualification 
  • A current Annual Practising Certificate
