About the Role 

 The Psychologist will provide service in the assessment and treatment of children with (or at risk of) developmental difficulties/disabilities. In particular, the psychologist will: 

  • Complete cognitive/neuropsychological assessments for children with developmental delays or disabilities or those children at risk of developmental disability or delay. 
  • Take part in specialist assessment of children suspected of having an autism spectrum disorder or other complex developmental presentations
  • Take part in the specialist assessment of children with complex developmental feeding difficulties
  • Provide brief interventions for children/families for issues such as grief following diagnosis, managing expectations, behaviour management, mental health screening. 

About the Team/Service Location 

Child Development Service (CDS) is a multidisciplinary team, working together to provide specialist assessment, diagnosis, and intervention for pēpī, tamariki, rangatahi with disabilities and/or developmental delays and their whānau. 

About you 

  • Previous experience in working with children and families with disability or developmental delay 
  • Sound knowledge of psychopathology, and psychological theories
  • Sound knowledge of DSM5 diagnoses and at least one therapy model is essential
  • Ability to assess, diagnose and treat children with (or at risk of) developmental difficulties/disabilities
  • Sound knowledge of psychometrics and experience with psychological testing 
  • Ability to develop sound psychological formulations based on thorough assessments         
  • Ability to advise, consult and educate the client and relevant others about treatment options
  • Ability to work alongside other CDS staff to provide psychological expertise within the CCDHB integrated care approach
  • Ability to attend and actively participate in regular meetings for the purposes of assessment, planning and implementing treatment
  • Experience in facilitating groups
  • Ability to practice in a manner consistent with established ethical and clinical practices standards as provided by the HPCAA, the Psychologists Board and other professional bodies
