Consultant Infectious Disease Physician

Location: Based at Wellington Regional Hospital – the service is currently working towards a regional model of care, so travel to other locations may also be included.

About the role

The Infectious Diseases (ID) Senior Medical Officer (SMO) role is a dynamic and broad role providing expert level advice regarding the investigation, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infection in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The clinical duties also involve training and supervision of RMOs, active participation in quality improvement, resource and activity management, leadership and clinical engagement with other services. We are currently expanding our level of support to other centres within the central region of NZ, so there would be significant opportunity to contribute to the sustainable development of these services.

The role is physically based at Wellington Regional Hospital, with close links to Hutt Hospital, Kenepuru Hopsital and Kapiti. The service is currently working towards a Regional model of care, so other locations within the Central Region will also be included.

This is a part time position with flexibility to accommodate applicant(s) interested in all or a portion of this FTE. There would also likely be opportunity for the successful applicant to negotiate FTE in either clinical microbiology or general medicine, which could occur in conjunction with acceptance of this position.

Wellington Regional Hospital is the tertiary referral centre for the central region, hosting a full range of surgical and medical subspecialties. Infection Services at Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley operates an integrated service across clinical infectious diseases, microbiology, infection prevention and control, and antimicrobial stewardship. We collaborate closely with many specialties, with a number of regular MDTs, and have a close working relationship with local public health. The majority of our SMO team work across ID and either microbiology, academia or general medicine and we have two ID registrars and a microbiology registrar.

We have a strong focus on quality improvement, innovation, and actively participate in and promote research. Many members of our team sit on national groups and there is strong support for this within the department.

Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district is located centrally in Wellington and has over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington region. We operate three hospitals – Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua – as well as the Kāpiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.

Moū – About you

• Vocationally registered in Internal Medicine (Infectious Diseases) with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
• FRACP or equivalent qualification and be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ
• Experience in the delivery of Infection services to comply with all regulations (NZ) and International Best Practise (HGSA)
• Someone well suited to the role will place high value on communication, honesty and integrity, and professional standards
• Dual training with clinical microbiology is not a necessity, but would be a considerable advantage for an applicant
