About the Team/Service/Location
The Ophthalmology Department provides a secondary and tertiary ophthalmic service for the Wellington region, including Kapiti, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa. Tertiary services are also provided for the lower North Island and upper South Island. The main outpatient department and inpatient beds are based at Wellington Regional Hospital with some services provided at Kenepuru Hospital.
Outpatient clinics provide comprehensive ophthalmic assessment on a referral basis from medical practitioners, public health vision screening technicians and optometrists. A 24-hour acute service is provided at Wellington Regional Hospital. Most ocular surgery is now carried out on a day case basis.
The service collaborates with other hospital services including Neurosurgery, Neurology, Intensive Care Unit, Oncology and Hutt Hospital’s Plastic Surgical Department.
Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district is located centrally in Wellington and has over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington region. We operate three hospitals – Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua – as well as the Kāpiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.
For an Ophthalmologist seeking a move from abroad, Wellington offers something especially compelling: a lifestyle where meaningful work meets genuine work‑life balance, with nature at your doorstep, minimal commute times, a welcoming professional community, and the space to truly enjoy life beyond the clinic.
Wellington isn’t just a place to live, it’s a place to fall in love with. Nestled between a sparkling harbour and lush, bush‑clad hills, this “coolest little capital” delivers an irresistible blend of culture, creativity, and natural beauty that few cities can rival. Its compact, walkable layout means you can wander from world‑class cafés to waterfront trails to hillside lookouts in minutes, all while soaking in a vibe that’s equal parts sophisticated and laid‑back. Wellington’s cultural pulse is unmatched: home to Te Papa, vibrant theatre, an iconic film industry led by Wētā Workshop, and more cafés and restaurants per capita than New York City, it thrives as New Zealand’s creative and culinary powerhouse. Add in its booming job market in government, tech, film, and professional services, plus top-tier universities and a welcoming, progressive community, and you’ve got a city that punches well above its weight in lifestyle, opportunity, and charm.
