Consultant Paediatric Surgeon

About the role
We are looking for a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon who is competent over the full scope of general paediatric surgery, both elective and acute, including neonatal surgery and paediatric urology.
The successful applicant will contribute to the paediatric surgical outreach service across several hospitals in the lower North Island. They will work closely with paediatric surgeons within our district, as well as paediatricians and surgeons caring for children across the district and wider region. The role will also involve close collaboration with the other three tertiary paediatric surgical centres to provide care for rare and complex cases.
About the service
The Wellington Paediatric Surgery service provides acute and elective paediatric surgery & urology to children from the entire central region. Tertiary services are delivered at the Wellington Regional Hospital. Also based in Wellington are paediatric day case surgery lists and clinics. These same services are extended by outreach, to Kenepuru Hospital, Whanganui, Palmerston North and Hastings on a regular basis according to local need. The service routinely performs about 1,200 surgical procedures each year. Within the framework of an integrated national service there are close links with the paediatric surgical unit in Christchurch (paediatric oncology), Auckland’s Starship Hospital and the Department of Paediatric Surgery, Waikato.
In addition, there is close co-operation with and contribution to the Wellington based Maternal-Fetal Management (MFM) service (one of only two in New Zealand), focusing on the wellbeing of women and new-born infants who have complex or ongoing Maternal, Fetal and Neonatal health needs. All neonatal surgeries are performed locally within this framework.

About you
- Eligible to achieve vocational registration in Paediatric Surgery with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
- FRACS or equivalent qualification or to be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ
- Expected to contribute to the outreach service to several hospitals
- Commitment to contribute to the Wellington regional service.
- Commitment to good clinical outcomes and patient centred care
- Commitment to training surgical registrars
- Be on the paediatric surgery acute roster for emergencies and acute admissions to Wellington Hospital
- Relevant experience and training
