Consultant Psychiatrist/Tākuta Mate Hinengaro Mātanga - Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services

We are seeking a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist to join our multi-disciplinary teams, comprising of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, psychotherapists, and administration staff. 

The Infant, Child, Adolescent and Family Service (ICAFS) is a community mental health service, which is part of Mental Health, Addictions & Intellectual Disability Service (MHAIDS) 3DHB.

The ICAFS provides specialist assessment and treatment for infants, children, and young people who have moderate to severe mental health needs and their families. We work within the Choice and Partnership Approach to deliver best evidence based practice and are focused on attaining the best outcomes for our service users. 

The consultant psychiatrist is responsible for ensuring that all clinical steps necessary are taken to assist clients to achieve optimal health, wellbeing and safety through the provision of appropriate assessment, intervention and education.  The consultant psychiatrist, as well as providing high quality diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of clients, is responsible for supporting clinical development of this service.


  • Be able to work in a multi-disciplinary team, responsive to the skills and opinions of colleagues while providing leadership when needed.
  • Be dedicated to supporting a team approach to working with young people and their families/whanau and holding risk within the community.
  • Be able to provide supervision of a basic or advanced training registrar within the ICAFS role.
  • Be on the on-call roster for the Hutt Valley District Health Board. This is a 1 in 8 commitment providing acute mental health care for the DHB. 
  • You will be supporting a Psychiatric Registrar and the Crisis Resolution Service (CRS)


  • Vocationally registered psychiatrist with Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) to practise as a consultant psychiatrist
  • FRANZCP or equivalent and be able to register for specialist registration with the MCNZ
  • Relevant child and adolescent training and experience
  • Have expertise in working across the 0 – 18 year age range
  • Have a current driver’s license


The Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Service (MHAIDS) spans three DHBs - Wairarapa, Hutt Valley and Capital and Coast DHB’s and includes local, regional, and national services. The local MHAIDS services are provided from multiple sites within the 3DHB sub-region – greater Wellington, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa. Te Korowai Whariki services include regional forensic and rehabilitation services covering the Central region while the intellectual disability services extend the length and breadth of the country from six bases located in Whangarei, Auckland, Cambridge, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin.

Capital and Coast DHB (CCDHB) is located centrally in Wellington and has the equivalent of around 4,300 full time staff, making us a major employer in the Wellington region. CCDHB operates two hospitals – Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua – as well as the Kapiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.
