About the role

We are seeking an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist (Senior Medical Officer) to join a new specialist kaupapa Māori adult mental health service in Te Awakairangi based in Lower Hutt.

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, you will provide specialist psychiatric assessment, treatment and clinical leadership within a multidisciplinary team. You will:

• Undertake psychiatric assessment and formulation
• Provide prescribing oversight and clinical review
• Act as Responsible Clinician where required
• Contribute to risk assessment and crisis planning
• Participate in multidisciplinary case review and care planning
• Support culturally responsive clinical practice in partnership with cultural leadership
• Contribute to clinical governance, service development and quality improvement processes
  

You will be professionally accountable within MHAIDS clinical governance structures and work in active partnership with Te Paepae Ārahi Trust leadership to support service development and equity outcomes. 

As this is a new service, the role offers a genuine opportunity to shape service design and clinical pathways from the outset. 

An on-call component applies to this position (details available at interview).  This role is covered by the terms and conditions of the ASMS SECA.

About the Team/Service/ Location

Te Wheke o Muturangi is a newly established specialist adult community mental health service delivered in partnership between MHAIDS and Te Paepae Ārahi Trust, a kaupapa Māori community provider. The service supports tāngata whaiora aged 18+ experiencing moderate to severe mental health and/or addiction challenges. Care is grounded in kaupapa Māori models of wellbeing, including Te Wheke, and affirms wairuatanga, whānau-centred practice, mana motuhake and recovery-oriented approaches.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of a culturally grounded, community-based specialist service within a district-employed SMO role.

The Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Service (MHAIDS) spans across Wairarapa, Hutt Valley and Capital and Coast and includes local, regional, and national services. The local MHAIDS services are provided from multiple sites within the 3 sub-region – greater Wellington, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa. 

About you

• Vocationally registered in Psychiatry with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
• FRANZCP or equivalent qualification and be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ
• Experience in adult community psychiatry
• Demonstrates commitment to equity and culturally responsive practice
• Values working in partnership with Māori providers and cultural leadership
• Has experience providing clinical leadership within multidisciplinary teams
