Cultural Clinical Educator

About the Role

Are you dynamic and creative with ability to translate Te Āo Māori concepts into the way mental health professionals work with Tangata Whaiora?  Then this is the ideal role for you.

MHAIDS are seeking a Kaitohu-Kakano Whakauru/Clinical Cultural Educator who can work in partnership with our other Educators to lead the development and delivery of a contemporary cultural education across the service. The role will ensure Tiriti o Waitangi and cultural concepts are well integrated into all education programs and professional clinical practice.

The role builds on foundation constructs of Tangata Tiriti & Tangata Whenua partnership and Implicit bias and ensures that Te Whare Tapa Whā is embedded into clinical frameworks. However, there is scope to develop further and think outside “the box” in meeting the primary goal of improving outcomes for Māori accessing our service.

The Kaitohu-Kakano Whakauru also has a key role in supporting MHAIDS staff cultural competency skills by being available for support, advice and promoting that cultural concepts are evident in all MHAIDS education / training programs. This includes overseeing the Diversity programs that enhance clinical practice with all cultural and linguistically diverse (CALD) client groups within MHAIDS.

About the Team/Service/ Location

MHAIDS Learning and Development are a diverse team of Educators, Instructional Designers and Administrators with a range of experience from relatively new to 20+ years of experience in education or training.  Each of our team have their own brief on the areas they deliver education, but the vision is to create a supportive cohesive team. The team is responsible for organising and delivering programs that support workforce development and capability across all MHAIDS staff. We also work collaboratively with other subject matter experts (Lived experience, Whānau,) to deliver training in a variety of other areas.

About you

Our Kaitohu-Kakano Whakauru needs to have a strong sense of who are they and where they are from. This requires a high level of self -awareness, emotional intelligence and the ability to articulate Te Āo Māori concepts in a mana-enhancing manner that is understood at all learning levels.

Ideally, you will have both clinical and education/training experience and are passionate about culturally competent practice. Being able to work autonomously and maintain effective key relationships are attributes for this position to be effective.

A good sense of humour would be beneficial but not essential in doing this role but there are times when the challenges can seem difficult. A capacity to work both independently and as part of a team is vital to the role.

You will have:

• Health Qualifications with a current APC
• Experience working in Health settings
• Adult Education Qualification or working towards this
• Full drivers licence
