About the role

We are currently seeking part time Diabetes and Endocrine Senior Medical Officers to join our District Diabetes and Endocrine Service. 

The Diabetes and Endocrine Senior Medical Officer (SMO) role is a dynamic and broad role providing expert level patient care regarding the investigation, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diabetic and endocrine related conditions. The clinical duties also involve training and supervision of RMOs, active participation in quality improvement, resource and activity management, leadership and clinical engagement with other services

About our team

The District Diabetes and Endocrine Service covers all sites within the district. The primary locations of work are Wellington Regional Hospital, Hutt Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital and also does some clinics in Kapiti and Masterton as required.

Diabetes and Endocrine Service is to be a centre of excellence empowering health professionals, patients and their whānau to maximise their ability to self-manage their diabetes or endocrine related health.

The service has four inter-related components:

  1. Endocrine specialist care
  2. Diabetes specialist care
  3. Specialist diabetes community management and nursing support service
  4. Diabetes Research Centre

The service is committed to equitable and high quality prevention, assessment and specialised diabetes and endocrine care. Our mission is to ensure that every person in our district living with diabetes has equitable access and the resources to manage.

Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district is located centrally in Wellington and has over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington region. We operate three hospitals – Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua – as well as the Kāpiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.

About you

  • Vocationally registered in Internal Medicine (Endocrinology) with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
  • FRACP or equivalent qualification and be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ
  • Experience in the delivery of Diabetes and Endocrine care to comply with all regulations (NZ) and International Best Practise (HGSA)
  • Work in collaboration with multidisciplinary team
  • Relevant experience and training
