Expert Dietitian (Diabetes)
Location: Wellington Regional Hospital
Contract: Permanent, Part Time (0.6 FTE / 24 hours per week)

About the Role
Salary: $119,995 - $127,720 (pro rata)
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Expert Dietitian to join our team in this newly created role. The Expert Dietitian (Diabetes) will provide specialist nutritional care and expert advice to individuals living with diabetes. This pivotal role requires a deep understanding of diabetes management for adults and children ensuring optimal patient outcomes across a variety of clinical settings.
Working closely with the adult and paediatric Diabetes MDT, you will be responsible for managing highly complex diabetes presentations and providing clinical leadership in dietetic management of diabetes across the district. This role primarily focuses on the outpatient setting, but may also include providing advice and support for dietitians working in the inpatient setting.
In addition to providing one-on-one consultations, you will also contribute to MDT clinics and lead group education sessions. Your patient caseload will include both adults and children with Type 1 diabetes, those using insulin pump therapy, and individuals with complex Type 2 diabetes. Non-clinical responsibilities include education and training, pathway and guideline development, and leading service improvement initiatives.
This role is based at Wellington Regional Hospital and also involves facilitating MITCHAL courses at Kenepuru Hospital. On occasion, the role may require visits to the community and other facilities across the district.
About the Team/Service/Location
This role sits in the Allied Health Outpatient Team which includes podiatrists, physiotherapists, social workers, dietitians all working predominantly in outpatient settings. The team is spread across 4 sites: Wellington Regional Hospital, Kenepuru Hospital, Kapiti Health Centre and Hutt Hospital. We are a diverse and inclusive team who provide a service to patients and their whānau across predominantly outpatient but also inpatient and community settings.
The role will also work closely with the Wellington Dietitian Team, a group of approximately 15 dietitians who work across inpatient and outpatient settings. This team is a highly dedicated and patient-focused team of clinicians, who value the contributions and skills of all of our members. The team strives to live our organisational values of Manaakitanga, Kotahitanga and Rangatiratanga.
All dietitians are supported with regular professional development opportunities to assist in meeting continuing competency requirements, as well as regular clinical supervision.
About you
Clinical experience and skills
- Six years dietetic practice, of which four years being in a clinical setting relevant to diabetes.
- Clinical experience and expert knowledge relevant to nutrition care and management of diabetes, more specifically Type 1 diabetes and complex Type 2 diabetes.
- Demonstrated specialist clinical skills relevant to diabetes management such as carbohydrate counting.
- Demonstrated research and/ or practice development in the nutritional management of diabetes.
- Up to date with international guidelines for clinical practice and able to impart this knowledge and skills to less experienced dietitians and other members of MDT.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with local service providers and stakeholders.
- A commitment and understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi (and application to health) and a willingness to work positively in improving health outcomes for Maori.
- High degree of proficiency in relationship building and engagement with Māori and Pacific peoples.
Professional Accreditations
- NZ Registered Dietitian with current annual practicing certificate with prescribing endorsement. (essential).
- Member of Dietitians New Zealand – Professional Association and Diabetes Special Interest Group. (desirable)
- Relevant post graduate qualification(s) or working towards this (desirable)
