General Surgery Fellow (Colorectal)

Location: Wellington Regional Hospital

Contract: Full time, 12 months fixed term - starting 2 February 2026

About the role
We are seeking a motivated and skilled Colorectal Fellow to join our surgical team for a one-year fixed-term position. This is an ideal opportunity for a surgeon who has recently completed, or will complete, general surgical training and achieve FRACS in 2025. The fellowship offers the opportunity to gain further experience as an independent specialist within a supportive tertiary environment.
Key responsibilities include:
- Independent management of patients in outpatient clinics, endoscopy, and theatre
- Active participation in the acute general surgery on-call roster (with senior SMO backup)
- Supervision and teaching of junior medical staff (RMOs)
- Involvement in departmental audits and quality improvement programmes
This role is well-suited to a candidate who is clinically confident, committed to teamwork, and prepared to manage their own patient workload within a tertiary surgical unit.
About the Team/Service/ Location
Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley District provides tertiary colorectal services to the Wellington region and central New Zealand. Our dedicated colorectal unit includes:
- Four experienced colorectal surgeons
- A nurse practitioner and clinical nurse specialist
- A supportive team of registrars and house officers
We manage a full range of benign and malignant colorectal conditions, with services aligned to faster cancer treatment targets. The Fellow will play an integral role in supporting high-quality surgical care across elective and acute settings.
Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district is located centrally in Wellington and has over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington region. We operate three hospitals – Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua – as well as the Kāpiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.
About you
- Completion of General Surgery training (FRACS or equivalent) or expected completion by 2025
- Eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and leadership skills
- Work in collaboration with multidisciplinary team
- Able to provide consistently high standards of medical care
- Relevant experience and training
