Genetic Intake Assistant/Clinic Administrator


Location: Wellington Regional Hospital 

Contract: 12 months fixed-term, part-time (32 hours per week)

About the Role 

This role provides intake assistant support to the clinical staff of the Genetic Health Service New Zealand (GHSNZ) Central Hub. An intake assistant will use databases, protocols and triage tools to support equitable and patient-centred triage and booking processes. A typical day would include reviewing referrals received by the service, gathering information to support clinical assessment and triage through interactions with patients/health care providers.

Compassionate communication is essential when discussing sensitive family history information and when talking to individuals who are in distress. The role will also provide support for the clinic administrators with referral management, data entry, reception duties and routine office administration. This role combines both administration work and contact with patients. It will suit someone with excellent communication and organisational skills who enjoys variety and problem solving. 

The hours of this role are negotiable, but we are mainly looking for someone who will cover the afternoons during the week.

About the Team/Service/Location 

GHSNZ work with individuals and families who have, or are at risk of developing, an inherited health condition. GHSNZ is a national service, with offices in Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland. This role is based at Wellington Hospital as part of the Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley Te Whatu Ora Genetic Service. We are a small and close-knit team who encourage a supportive and positive work environment. You will work within a team of 3 clinic administrators and a clinical team consisting of consultant clinical geneticists and genetic counsellors. We also work closely with the Wellington Regional Genetic Laboratory staff who are co-located. 

About you 

We are looking for someone who is versatile and will enjoy working in a unique role within the service. The following skills or experience would be ideal, but we will consider a range of applicants. The skills and knowledge we are looking for include:

  • Proven communication skills and the ability to talk effectively to patients/clients and health professionals. 
  • Excellent administration skills, with confidence in the use of a range of databases.
  • A commitment to diversity and cultural safety. 
  • Organisational skills, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. 
  • Shows initiative and enjoys problem solving.
  • Experience in the health care sector would be an advantage. The role might suit someone who is considering a career in genetic counselling, a graduate or someone returning to the workforce from a relevant profession (e.g. genetics, psychology, nursing, social work).
