Health Care Assistant – Child Health Service (Piko Ward)
Location: Wellington Regional Hospital
Contract: Permanent, Part Time (0.4 FTE) - working Saturday & Sunday AM or PM shift (2 positions available)

About the Role
The HCA position contributes to the successful operation of the nursing team. The HCA is part of a collaborative health care team; they assist the RN to meet the patient needs when it is appropriate for the RN to delegate aspects of care to a trained unregulated healthcare role. And supports RNs on the children’s ward by assisting with clinical and non-clinical tasks. The HCA support releases RN time to provide clinical patient care. Role may involve supporting the eating disorder service and providing patient observation and engagement duties.
The salary range for this role is NZNO/HNZ MECA HCA Step 1-5 or $61,603 - $72,117 (pro rata).
About the Team/Service/ Location
Te Wao Nui Children’s Hospital is a purpose‑built tertiary paediatric facility supporting children and their whānau across the region. It delivers specialist inpatient, outpatient, day‑patient, and home‑based care for children up to 16 years old across Wellington Hospital, Kenepuru Hospital, the Puketiro Centre, and outreach clinics.
The service is well‑resourced, with 49 inpatient beds/cots across two main wards: Piko, a 23‑bed medical ward including a 9‑bed short‑stay unit, and Kōwhai, a 17‑bed surgical ward. Additional capacity includes 12 surgical day‑stay beds and a 3‑bed day‑stay unit dedicated to children’s cancer services.
About you
- Level 3 NZQA National Certificate in Health & Wellbeing (or equivalent) or first year nursing and 4th year medical education student
- Previous experience in a health care setting desirable
