Health / Clinical Psychologist (Cancer Support Team)

Location: Wellington & Multiple Locations across the district

Contract: Permanent, Part Time (0.7FTE / 28 hours per week)

About the Role

We are excited to offer this opportunity for a registered Clinical or Health Psychologist (Kaimātai Hinengaro) to join our district specialist cancer allied health team as part of the Cancer Psychological and Social Support service. In this role you will provide psychological care for patients and their whānau following a new or recent diagnosis of cancer, with a goal of helping them to manage its impact in their lives, promoting psychological resilience, and adjusting to serious-illness. 

While this role is based at Wellington Regional Hospital, the programme has a regional focus and reaches well beyond a single hospital site. As we continue to strengthen supportive care and deliver services closer to home, you will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with clinicians and services across the region to improve the support available to people affected by cancer and their whānau.

Duties will include:

• Conducting thorough psychological assessments
• Formulating and implementing evidence-based psychological interventions
• Providing clinical advice and support to the wider MDT when needed
• Maximising the person’s ability to cope with, and engage with their treatment plan
• Ensuring that service users have timely and equitable access to psychological support
• Contributing to our local and national ongoing education and service development programmes

About the Team/Service Location

This role sits within the Allied Health Oncology team, part of the Community, Allied Health and Older Adults (CAHOA) group. Our friendly and collaborative team includes Social Workers, Psychologists, Dietitians, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech-Language Therapists, who work alongside nursing and medical colleagues to support people receiving treatment for cancer and complex blood disorders across all settings of care. 

About you 

To be successful in this role you will have: 

• Registration as a Psychologist (Health or Clinical) with the New Zealand Psychologists Board (NZPB)
• A current Annual Practicing Certificate
• Experience working as a psychologist within a physical/general health setting
• Experience working with people who have complex needs, including completing comprehensive psychosocial assessments to inform care planning, formulation and intervention
• An ability to work flexibly and adaptably in fast paced clinical settings
• Experience working with people undertaking treatment for cancer (desired)
