Local Mortality Review Group Coordinator

Location:  Wellington Regional Hospital

Contract: Permanent, Part Time 0.5 FTE

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is dedicated to serving all New Zealanders. Through integration and collaboration, we’re building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whānau-centred care, and excellence.

About the Role

Salary: $94,394 (pro rata and negotiable related to your professional collective agreement)

The Local Mortality Review Group Coordinator plays a vital role in strengthening the safety and wellbeing of pēpi, tamariki and rangatahi across our region. You will lead a local child and youth quality assurance programme dedicated to reducing inequities and preventing avoidable morbidity and mortality.

In this role, you’ll facilitate multi-agency mortality reviews and translate insights into meaningful, system-level recommendations that drive real change for children and young people aged 28 days to 24 years.

With a strong focus on responsive action, your work will help shape and inform quality improvement initiatives across health, disability, social and community services — contributing to better outcomes for whānau in our localities and supporting improvements across Aotearoa New Zealand.

About the Team/Service Location

You’ll be part of a committed, interprofessional team that brings together specialist services to support safe, coordinated, and high-quality care for tamariki, rangatahi, whānau, and adults. Our team includes experts in Gateway assessments for tamariki involved with Oranga Tamariki, specialist clinical assessment, local child and youth mortality review, and dedicated hospital–Oranga Tamariki liaison. We also have coordinators who provide leadership across safeguarding, child protection, and support for vulnerable adults. Working collaboratively across health and social sectors, we strengthen pathways, share expertise, and promote coordinated, culturally grounded practice.

The service:

  • Coordinates activities and initiatives that strengthen our workforce’s ability to respond to all forms of family violence.
  • Provides education, structure, and resources to support effective violence intervention across the health sector.
  • Maintains strong referral pathways with community partners.
  • Delivers specialist services, including the Gateway Assessment Service, Child Protection Clinic, Local Mortality Review Group, Violence Intervention Programme coordination, and Oranga Tamariki Hospital Liaison Practice Lead.

About you

You will bring strong health sector knowledge and experience, along with the ability to work confidently in complex systems and partnership-based environments. You will demonstrate:

  • A comprehensive understanding of the New Zealand health system, including current health sector priorities, structures, and drivers
  • Significant relevant work experience within the health sector or a closely related field
  • Relevant tertiary qualification (or equivalent experience)
  • Demonstrated ability to think and work as a systems thinker, with an understanding of how services and agencies interact across complex environments
  • Experience applying quality improvement methodologies to support change and improvement in complex service settings
  • Strong facilitation skills, with the ability to lead discussions, influence outcomes, and bring diverse groups together
  • Proven experience in change management, including implementing and embedding new ways of working
  • Demonstrated experience working in partnership with Māori, and an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations within the health sector
