Mental Health Support Worker for Tawhirimatea Service
Location: Ratonga Rua O Porirua Campus, Porirua
Contract: Permanent Part Time (0.93 FTE) 74.4 hrs per fortnight, 4 days on/ 2 days off
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is dedicated to serving all New Zealanders. Through integration and collaboration, we’re building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whānau-centred care, and excellence.
About the Role
The Mental Health Support Worker (MHSW) is part of the unregulated health workforce and therefore must always work under direction and/or delegation of a Registered Nurse (RN). The MHSW role is task-specific and has defined boundaries.
The MHSW is part of a collaborative health care team; they assist the RN to meet the tangata whai ora needs when it is appropriate for the RN to delegate aspects of care to a trained unregulated health MHSW role. The MHSW contributes to the successful operation of the nursing team and as such is a valued team member in meeting tangata whai ora goals of care within the rehabilitation pathway.
The RN may delegate aspects of the care activities to MHSWs when the work does not require professional nursing knowledge, judgement and skill. The MHSW must seek guidance and supervision when needed. The MHSW may also be allocated service activities or duties that contribute to the service function and delivery.
MHSW working hours are normally rostered and rotating but this will depend on the area of practice.
Specific training will be provided to ensure the MHSW has appropriate skills according to the employer and service expectations.
The MHSW gives and receives feedback on their performance in an annual performance appraisal with the manager.
