Nurse Educator - Wellington Emergency Department & Crisis Resolution Service

About the Role
The Nurse Educator role practices across both the Wellington Emergency Department (ED) and the Wellington Crisis Resolution Service (CRS). In ED, the priority includes provision of education and training to increase ED staff skills, confidence and capability when working with people who are presenting with mental health problems/in crisis. Education and training will be provided to other staff across the acute care continuum, alongside nurse educators in ED. Mental health and addiction specific resources for staff and people presenting in crisis and their whānau will also be further developed and implemented. The role will work alongside and with the MHAIDS Mental Health ED Team.
In CRS, the Nurse Educator role will work alongside the Speciality Clinical Nurse to enhance nursing care provided by CRS through assessing nurse’s educational needs, provide clinical expertise in complex / challenging presentations and complete training needs assessments informed by practice and organisational needs, developing and conducting education sessions as required.
We envisage that 0.6 FTE will be working alongside the ED clinicians, and 0.4 FTE with the Wellington CRS.
About the Teams
The Mental Health Emergency Department Team consists of a Senior Medical Officer, Speciality Clinical Nurses and registered nurses who work with tāngata whaiora and their whānau who present to the Emergency Department with acute mental health needs. The Team work collaboratively with ED colleagues and Community Mental Health Teams.
The Wellington Crisis Resolution Service is a multidisciplinary group of mental health professionals who work collaboratively to provide timely assessment and treatment to individuals presenting with acute mental health needs in the Wellington Locality. The service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and assesses people in a variety of settings. The Service provides culturally safe interventions, and integrated support for tangata whaiora and whanau.
About you
Essential qualifications, skills and qualifications:
- Registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand.
- A current practising certificate.
- Completion of an undergraduate (leading to registration) or post graduate programme in mental health nursing.
- Three years mental health nursing experience, with demonstrated proficiency in mental health crisis assessment, formulation, planning and implementation of care.
- Relevant qualification in adult education or working towards this within agreed timeframe.
- A personal commitment to on-going learning and development including attainment / maintenance of senior PDRP.
- Demonstrates an understanding of the significance of and obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including how to apply Te Tiriti principles in a meaningful way in the nursing role.
- Master’s in nursing or enrolment in same.
