Nurse Practitioner – Wellington Emergency Department

Location: Emergency Department, Wellington Regional Hospital
Position: Nurse Practitioner 0.5 full time equivalent FTE Permanent
Position Two 1.0 FTE Fixed Term for 6 Months.
Salary: NZNO HNZ Grade 6 as Nurse Practitioner (NP) with registration as NP in NZ
or Grade 3 if appointed to NP Candidate role in a NP Candidacy.

About the role
We have two Nurse Practitioner (NP) Emergency position opportunities available. (There is also a NP Candidacy position option to support registration for this area of practice). The advanced nursing role works independently and collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team (MDT) in the Emergency Department (ED) on the Wellington Regional Hospital (WRH) campus. The advanced practice role has contact with a wide range of MDTs, services and providers.
The NP role is integral to providing an individual and population-based approach to meet healthcare needs to improve the effectiveness of care delivery. The role importantly contributes to shortened ED stays and improved patient and whānau experience.
This advanced nursing role improves access to assessment and coordinated intervention for patients with a wide range of illnesses or injuries of differing degrees of complexity and seriousness. This requires a flexible approach, to seek medical colleagues input when required, while working independently and collaboratively to enable effective and efficient care management. This approach improves access to services through consultation, direct care and treatment, as well as providing support through clinical advice and education. As a leader clinically, you will be involved with the management of the ED area (for minor injury and illness patient presentations) working with nurses including Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). While, managing full episodes of care for these patients you will also support colleague’s education and CNS management of patients with minor injuries and Illness.
The advanced practice role is integral to the provision and ongoing development of high-quality service provision - that promotes optimal experience and equitable outcomes for patients and their whānau.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Providing advanced, comprehensive care for patients in the emergency setting.
- Performing assessments, diagnose illnesses, and develop treatment plans in collaboration with MDTs as applicable
- Collaborating with physicians, nurses, and support staff to manage patient flow efficiently.
- Ensuring the highest level of care and safety for all patients.
- Utilising advanced clinical judgment and critical thinking to make informed, timely decisions.
About the Team/Service/ Location
The Emergency Department is situated on the Wellington campus adjacent to the Wellington Regional Hospital building. Accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine our Department provides a Tertiary Level 6 Emergency Service committed to providing high-quality acute and emergent care to patients. We aim to deliver high quality and safe care at all times with a focus on optimising improvements to benefit our patients outcomes. This includes a focus on the care experience for them and their family/whānau.

Our MDT comprises over 100 full time equivalent (FTE) professionals, including medical, nursing support and administrative staff. The value of an interdisciplinary approach in this dynamic environment is recognised. Leadership is overseen by a Nurse Manager, and a Medical Clinical Leader of Emergency Medicine, with operational management provided by the Operation Manager and additional support for optimising patient flow.
About you
We are looking for a recognised advanced practice nurse that has a passion for ongoing learning and development with the ability to share, support and develop the practice of others. The successful applicant will have a proven advanced emergency nursing expertise. You will also be highly organised with exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills and able to demonstrate a high degree of self-awareness and reflection. Additional knowledge, attributes and experience ideal for this position include:
- Experience in emergency nursing (Minimum 3-4 years) or related practice area
- Comprehensive knowledge of the NZ health system, the District environment, systems and processes
- Knowledge of the trends and emerging issues for the nursing profession.
- Has experience in leadership, management and coaching and mentoring approaches.
- Experience and credibility within the healthcare team as a professional resource in the team
- Proficiency in advanced nursing procedures
- Exceptional attention to detail and time management
- Is a strong team player that has excellent communication and works collaboratively with other
You will need NP registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) or if an internationally trained NP then the education equivalence to gain this registration.

We are looking for a recognised advanced practice nurse that has a passion for ongoing learning and the ability to adapt to work effectively with different learning experiences. You will need:
- Experience in emergency nursing (minimum 3 years) or related practice area
- Registered Nurse (RN) and a current practising certificate with no restrictions from the NCNZ
- Expert level on the PDRP or Senior Expert pathway with at least three- four years relevant expertise and working at an advanced RN practice level
- A Clinical Masters or the postgraduate courses to meet the requirements to undertake the national Nurse Practitioner Training Programme (NPTP).

Note: If appointed to the role and a current employee at Capital Coast and Hutt Valley Health NZ - the Candidacy period will be a secondment.
