Nurse Practitioner – Wellington Emergency Department

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Nurse Practitioner to join our highly professional and dynamic team in Te Pae Tiaki | Emergency Department at Wellington Regional Hospital, where you can be confident that there is never a dull day! This is an exciting opportunity to provide advanced clinical assessment, diagnosis, and management for patients presenting with acute and urgent conditions, across adults and children where relevant.

You will work both autonomously and collaboratively with emergency physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and wider hospital services to ensure timely, patient- and whānau-centred care. Your role will be pivotal in improving patient flow, enhancing access to care, and supporting safe, effective decision-making in a busy, high-performing environment.

As part of your role, you will be involved in the management of the Rohē Kākāriki (Green Zone – Minor Injuries and Illness area), supporting the Clinical Nurse Specialist and coordinating day-to-day operations in this area. You will also be encouraged to lead and develop innovative models of care, applying your advanced clinical judgment to formulate and implement management plans, and contribute to ongoing service development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for patients in the Emergency Department
  • Work autonomously within scope, including prescribing and administering medications in line with legislation, codes, and clinical guidelines
  • Collaborate effectively within an interdisciplinary team to optimise patient outcomes and enhance care coordination Candidates applications:
  • Lead and participate in quality improvement initiatives, integrating evidence-based practice and service innovation
  • Support the reduction of ED wait times and length of stay through effective patient management
  • Monitor clinical outcomes, contribute to clinical pathway development, and address variance to protocols
  • Provide clinical leadership, education, coaching, and mentoring to nursing and interprofessional colleagues
  • Coordinate day-to-day operations of the Green Zone and support Clinical Nurse Specialist initiatives
  • Support the development of a positive, high-performing team culture focused on excellence in emergency care

What You Bring – Nurse Practitioner

  • Current Mātanga Tapuhi NP Annual Practising Certificate with relevant recent clinical experience
  • Mātanga Tapuhi NP registration with NCNZ and evidence of ongoing competence requirements
  • Nurse Practitioner experience in emergency nursing
  • Completion of Clinical Masters, including NP practicum (60 credits)
  • Appropriate technical skills/certification/endorsements, including:

Radiology Endorsement

 Completion of Nursing 784 Advanced Nursing Practicum Paper or equivalent

 Point-of-Care Ultrasound credentials or equivalent

  • Strong leadership and relational skills, with experience in mentoring, education, and service improvement
  • Commitment to high-quality, whānau-centred care
  • Collaborative, adaptable, and patient-focused approach

Optional – Nurse Practitioner Candidacy Opportunity

For recognised advanced practice nurses seeking NP Candidacy, we offer:

  • Minimum 3 years Emergency Nursing experience
  • Current RN practising certificate without restrictions
  • Expert level on PDRP or Senior pathway with at least 3–4 years relevant experience
  • Clinical Masters or postgraduate courses to meet NP practicum requirements under the National Nurse Practitioner Training Support Scheme (NPTSS)
  • Access to a well-developed NP Candidacy Programme, including professional supervision, peer support, and practice development

About you

A New Zealand registered nurse, you will have a current practising certificate with the Nursing Council of New Zealand. Additionally, you will bring to this role prior experience in emergency nursing. A post graduate qualification in nursing, or study towards this is expected. Awareness of and sensitivity to individual and cultural differences is essential.
