Operations Manager - Orthopaedics

Contract: Fixed-term, full-time until 15 November 2026

About the Role 

We are recruiting an Operations Manager responsible for the Orthopaedic Service at Capital Coast. This position is fixed term to cover a secondment.

The Orthopaedic service provides for the management of major injuries and fractures and the treatment of congenital, infective, degenerative, and malignant disorders of the musculoskeletal system. A regional tertiary service is provided for complex conditions. Work is undertaken in both Wellington and Kenepuru Hospitals. The service also provides orthopaedic consultant and registrar cover for Wairarapa.

The Operations Manager is the operational driving force to manage the delivery of orthopaedic services across the district. The Operations Manager will develop, strengthen and enhance this service, alongside managing the day to day operational needs of the team. A key driver continues to be achieving equitable health outcomes.

The Operations Manager will ensure that organisational objectives are met and that resources are managed effectively and efficiently to provide contracted services within budget, whilst ensuring compliance with relevant legislative and Ministry of Health requirements, Government targets, organisation/service policies and quality indicators.

The salary range is $140,000 - $150,000.

 

About the Team/Service Location 

The Surgical Service Group is one of six within CCHV district provider services. Specialties within the Directorate are at secondary and tertiary level with service provision for the district, the central Region and wider Regions. Surgical operating provision is largely across 3 hospitals (Wellington, Hutt, and Kenepuru) and a district outsourcing plan with private providers. Outpatient clinics are held at Wellington, Hutt Valley, Kenepuru, Paraparaumu, contracted at private provider sites, Marae and through hub and spoke arrangements at other regional hospitals.

The orthopaedic service provides In-patient and outpatient services. The team consists of 20 Orthopaedic Surgeons, 19 Registrars (6 SET trainees and 13 junior registrars) and 7 house officers, along with a strong multidisciplinary team of medical, allied and nursing. The team works as an inclusive and supportive group, recognising the skills that all members bring to the service and working together successfully for the benefit of the population.

 

About you 

We are seeking an innovative, energetic, and experienced Manager, who has proven transformational leadership skills and an excellent knowledge of the health sector.

This middle management role partners the Clinical Leaders and Directorate of Nursing in the delivery of safe affordable services.

The Operations Manager:

  • Influences, builds, and refreshes systems, services, or interventions that achieve the vision of the Group.
  • Translates strategy into operational plans that improve the Capital Coast and Hutt Valley Provider Services capability and increase capacity to deliver agreed services.
  • Balances meeting day-to-day operational challenges while keeping sight of directorate objectives and implementing system and process changes to provide solutions.

 

Skills & Experience

  • Health professional qualification (essential)
  • Experience working within an acute clinical service
  • Proven track record in service development, delivery and improvement
  • Previous experience in a leadership/management role in the health sector 
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development of self and others
  • Demonstrated understanding of and sensitivity to cultural and ethical dimensions of practice
  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment to achievement of equitable health outcomes
