About the role

We are looking for General Otolaryngologist with sub-specialty skill in otology to join our department from end of 2025 -2028. This is for adult and paediatric services. The position is 0.8 to 1.0 FTE by negotiation.

The successful applicant will be a highly motivated team player who enjoys working in a collegial environment. This role is in a sub-regional ENT service including Wellington Regional Hospital and Hutt Valley hospital and the successful candidate will be expected to work across the greater Wellington region at our satellite sites, Kenepuru and Wairarapa Hospitals.

Applicants from post-fellowship or experienced surgeons with a sub-specialty area of interest in Otology are sought.

The position will also involve a range of acute and elective general ORL surgery so successful applicants will need to have current experience in all acute general otolaryngology work.

Some undergraduate teaching is expected, as well as supervision and teaching of registrars in the otolaryngology training rotation. We have house-officers on site at our inpatient locations and 4.5 person registrar team who provide acute, inpatient and outpatient services at all sites alongside the senior medical team.

This position is offered for a three-year term, concluding at the end of 2028, with a formal discussion regarding future opportunities to occur at the 18-month mark. Depending on regional planning initiatives, there may be a future opportunity to make this a permanent position, including servicing a wider regional.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The department currently consists of ten general and subspecialist fellowship trained otolaryngology surgeons who provide a wide range of services to the greater Wellington region and tertiary-level care for the wider central region.

The service includes general otolaryngology, rhinology and anterior skull base surgery, otology, cochlear implantation, paediatric otolaryngology, and head and neck surgery. We work closely with oncology, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, paediatric medical and surgical, and neurosurgery services. There is support from our allied health colleagues in audiology, SLT and physiotherapy (vestibular). The team has two clinical nurse specialists dedicated to ENT providing inpatient and outpatient support.

Suitable candidates will have opportunities for research, we have a co-located medical school which has teaching in clinical years of University of Otago undergraduates years 4-6.

We provide outreach visiting outpatient services to the Wairarapa district located in Masterton.

Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district is located centrally in Wellington and has over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington region. We operate three hospitals – Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua – as well as the Kāpiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.

About you

  • Vocationally registered in Otolaryngology with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
  • FRACS or equivalent qualification and eligible for MCNZ registration
  • Fellowship sub-specialty trained in otology
  • Collaborative and team-focused approach within a multidisciplinary environment
  • Participation in relevant service and clinical meetings
  • Relevant clinical experience and training
