Registered Nurse - Acute Flow Co-ordinator

Location:  Wellington Regional Hospital

Contract:  6 month Fixed Term, Full time

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is dedicated to serving all New Zealanders. Through integration and collaboration, we’re building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whānau-centred care, and excellence.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and operationally astute Acute Flow Coordinator (AFC) to join our Integrated Operations Centre (IOC). This new fixed term role will be influential to how we manage demand, capacity, and patient movement across the hospital, particularly during periods of pressure.

The Acute Flow Coordinator works as the critical link between the Emergency Department (ED) and inpatient wards, ensuring acute flow actions are coordinated, timely, and aligned with the SSIED escalation framework.

If you thrive in fast-paced environments, enjoy system-wide problem solving, and are motivated by improving patient experience and safety, this is an opportunity to make a tangible difference every day.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and interpret system pressure indicators and SSIED thresholds
  • Coordinate timely admissions, transfers, and discharges across services
  • Activate Transit Lounge pull processes and support early inpatient engagement
  • Escalate risks clearly and early using accurate, real-time information
  • Maintain momentum during sustained escalation and support timely de escalation
  • Attend and actively contribute to IOC huddles and key handovers

About you

You will bring:

  • A strong understanding of hospital operations and patient flow
  • Experience working in an acute or complex healthcare environment (ED, inpatient, or duty management strongly preferred)
  • Excellent communication skills and confidence engaging across multiple services
  • Proven ability to prioritise, coordinate, and progress actions in real time
  • Comfort using digital systems and operational dashboards to support decision-making
  • A collaborative, calm, and solutions focused approach under pressure
