About the Role 

A typical day for a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) community nurse is varied and focused on supporting the mental health and wellbeing of children, young people, and their families in community settings.  Community nurses carry out mental health assessments, monitor risk, develop and review care plans, and provide therapeutic interventions.  They also respond to the need of the young person and work to ensure young people receive timely, whanau-centred care.

Throughout the day, CAMHS community nurses collaborate closely with families, schools, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care and promote positive outcomes. They provide psychoeducation, emotional support, and practical strategies to help young people manage their mental health while encouraging recovery, resilience, and independence. Documentation, assessment, including risk, and maintaining accurate clinical records are essential parts of the role. Strong communication, empathy, clinical judgement, and adaptability are vital.

About the Team/Service/ Location 

 The Porirua Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) team provides specialist assessment, treatment, and support for children and young people experiencing moderate to severe mental health difficulties. Working collaboratively with young people, their whānau, schools, and community services, the team delivers evidence-based, recovery-focused care tailored to individual/whanau needs.

About you 

• Registered Nurse with a current Annual Practising Certificate 
• Experience working in child and adolescent mental health, or a strong background in nursing with a commitment to developing CAMHS expertise.
• Complete comprehensive mental health assessments, develop collaborative care plans 
• Strong communication skills, develop collaborative interventions, deliver interventions
