Registered Nurse- MHAIDS NESP Programme


Location: Across MHAIDS services 

Contract:  Fixed Term ( August 2026-August 2027), Part time (0.9 FTE – 72 hours a fortnight.)

About the Role  

Are you looking for a Nursing role in mental health, addiction or intellectual disability services?  Are you an experienced nurse wishing to move into the speciality field of mental health, addiction or intellectual disability nursing.  The Nurse Entry to Specialist Practice Program (NESP) is an opportunity for you to upskill and complete the postgraduate program in mental health and addiction nursing that will support your development of specialist MHAIDS skills and knowledge. 

We are looking for nurses who are dedicated professionals who can support Tangata Whaiora in their individual recovery journeys and work holistically to achieve optimal health outcomes. We are also seeking nurses who are committed to demonstrating trauma informed and culturally responsive person-centred care. Taking particular care when engaging with Maori whanau, hapu and iwi. 

If you are successful, you will be a part of our dynamic mental health, intellectual disability and addiction service. You will collaborate with a wide range of community and inpatient mental health professionals and network with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) across the Kapiti, Hutt Valley, Wellington and the Wairarapa regions. Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work collaboratively are essential to your success.

About the Service Location 

MHAIDS spans three districts - Wairarapa, Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley and includes local, regional, and national services. The local MHAID services are provided from multiple sites within the sub-region – greater Wellington, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa. Te Korowai Whāriki services include regional forensic and rehabilitation services covering the Central region while the intellectual disability services extend the length and breadth of the country from six bases located in Whangarei, Auckland, Cambridge, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin.   

About you 

You will be committed to Te Tiriti O Waitangi 5 enhanced principals which include partnership, active protection, equity, options, and self-determination in your daily nursing practice. You will be passionate about making a difference for tangata whaiora and whānau.  You will have excellent time management and people skills. You will have solid critical thinking skills and evidence-based knowledge that underpins your nursing practice. 

  • Registration with Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ)  
  • A current Annual Practicing Certificate (APC) and scope appropriate to place of work  
  • Full drivers licence 
  • Must be NZ Citizen or hold residency 
  • A minimum of two years of experience working in New Zealand as a registered nurse
