Social Worker or Psychologist - Supportive Care Education
Location: Wellington & Multiple Locations across the district
Contract: Fixed Term, Part Time, 0.4 FTE
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is dedicated to serving all New Zealanders. Through integration and collaboration, we’re building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whānau-centred care, and excellence.
About the Role
This fixed-term role offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced Social Worker or Psychologist to lead the development of supportive care education for clinicians delivering Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT) across Capital, Coast & Hutt Valley Cancer Services. This role is 0.4FTE (16 hours per week) for up to six months.
With a focus on new cancer medicines and the delivery of care closer to home, you will identify learning needs, develop and deliver education across a range of settings, and support workforce capability in delivering equitable, patient-centred care. This will include designing and facilitating a supportive care study day, identifying opportunities for ongoing staff development, promoting understanding of the stepped care model, and helping clinicians identify practical strategies to support patients and whānau with varying levels of supportive care need.
Through this work, you will help build a more confident and consistent workforce, reduce variation in practice, and support more equitable experiences and outcomes for people receiving cancer treatment.
This role can be offered as a secondment for existing Health New Zealand employees.
About the Team/Service/Location
The Allied Health Oncology team provides specialist support for people affected by cancer across diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. This role reports to the Team Lead, Allied Health Oncology and is one of three fixed-term positions established to review and strengthen cancer care pathways across the district.
Working closely with Wellington Blood & Cancer, community providers, and cancer support services, the team delivers predominantly outpatient and community-based care. As more cancer treatment is provided closer to home, we are focused on ensuring patients can access coordinated, high-quality support wherever they receive care.
About you
To be successful in this role you will have:
- NZ Registered Social Worker with current New Zealand Annual Practicing Certificate (APC).
- Current full NZ driver’s license with ability to drive a manual and automatic car.
- Clinical experience in Oncology/Haematology, preferably in a hospital setting.
- A commitment to and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (and its application to health) and a willingness to work positively in improving health outcomes for Māori.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Internet resources and e-mail.
- A high standard of written and spoken English
- Experience planning, facilitating and delivering education and training (desired)
If you are motivated by innovation, collaboration and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in a highly specialised area of healthcare, we invite you to join us in building the future of SACT care across our district.
