Unit Charge Sonographer - Radiology and Perinatal Ultrasound (Women’s Health)

Location: Wellington Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital

Contract: Permanent, Full Time, Rostered and Rotating

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is dedicated to serving all New Zealanders. Through integration and collaboration, we’re building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whānau-centred care, and excellence.

About the Role

No two days look quite the same in this role - and that's the appeal. As Unit Charge of Ultrasound, you'll move between two of our busiest and most rewarding environments: the Radiology Ultrasound Unit and the Perinatal Ultrasound Unit within Women's Health. One moment you might be scanning a complex diagnostic case or guiding a trainee; the next, shaping the roster, planning the service alongside the management team, or solving a workflow challenge across sites. You'll keep your hands in clinical work while leading the day-to-day running of the unit - joining a supportive, multidisciplinary team that delivers tertiary imaging for over a million people across the lower North Island and upper South Island, and that takes teaching and ongoing development seriously, with regular upskilling in areas like Maternal Fetal Medicine, Vascular and MSK. If you're an experienced Sonographer after variety, leadership, and the chance to genuinely shape a service, this is it. The role is full-time across clinical and administrative duties, though we're happy to discuss the right hours for the right person.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The Unit Charge is an essential part of both the Radiology Management and Women's Health teams, as well as the wider teams across the hospital and district. The successful candidate will build close working relationships with clinicians and surgeons from the Radiology, Cardiology, Vascular and Women's Health teams, while working day to day alongside the wider Radiology and Women's Health departments. Based across Wellington and Kenepuru hospitals, the Ultrasound team at Capital and Coast offers an innovative, respectful and welcoming clinical environment with a diverse and inclusive work culture.

About you

  • A minimum of 5 years' clinical Ultrasound experience; previous senior or leadership experience is valued but not essential.
  • Registered, or eligible for registration, with the New Zealand Medical Radiation Technologists Board in the Scope of Practice Ultrasound.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced service and balancing time across both clinical and administrative responsibilities.
  • Strong communication skills, a problem-solving mindset, and a genuine passion for patient care.
  • Motivated to take a step up or new challenge, and excited to help improve a tertiary Ultrasound service.
