Visiting Neurodevelopmental Therapist

About the Role 

The visiting neurodevelopmental therapist (VNT) works with children 0-3 years of age who have, or are at risk of, a disability and/or developmental delay. The VNT will be a registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist, working in a transdisciplinary capacity. 

The VNT will work in profession specific assessment and intervention, and as part of the CDS multidisciplinary team. 

CDS operates over three sites (Te Wao Nui, Kenepuru and Puketiro) with clinics also offered in Kapiti. All clinicians must be able to work over all three sites if requested to do so. Work is within outpatient clinics and in community settings, such as homes and education facilities. 

About the Team/Service Location 

Child Development Service (CDS) is a multidisciplinary team, working together to provide specialist assessment, diagnosis, and intervention for pēpī, tamariki, rangatahi with disabilities and/or developmental delays and their whānau. 

About you 

  • NZ Registered Occupational Therapist with current annual practicing certificate. OR NZ Registered Physiotherapist with current annual practicing certificate. 
  • Minimum of 3 years clinical practice as either an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist, including recent paediatric experience 
  • Sound knowledge and assessment skills of the neurodevelopmental norms and ages and stages of under 5 year olds, particularly up to the age of 3 years 
  • Skilled in assessing the impact of premature birth, congenital or acquired conditions, and long term illness or injury, in the context of this knowledge 
  • Skilled in facilitating optimal neurodevelopmental positioning, handling and movement of infants and young children, particularly up to the age of 3 years 
  • Skilled in assessing the need for and providing specialist paediatric equipment including 24 hour postural care, seating, standing and mobility equipment 
  • Skilled in communicating with, supporting and educating parents/caregivers/wider family and providing home programmes 
  • Skilled in communicating and liaising with other internal and/or external professionals as indicated, including Plunket and Early Childhood Education
